Kowdiar-Vellayambalam Stretch Inauguration
The reconstructed road from Kowdiar Junction to Vellayambalam was
inaugurated on Feb 27, 2006 by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy at a
function held at Kowdiar Square. Known as the `royal avenue' because
of the Kowdiar Palace at the northern end, the 1.2-km stretch has
been designed scientifically with side drains, paved footpaths,
ducts for utility lines, modern street-lighting fixtures, median
and traffic signages.
The section of the road from Kowdiar Junction up to Manmohan Bungalow
has six-lane width while the rest is equipped for four-lane traffic.
The first satellite- supported traffic signalling unit in the city
has also been installed at Kowdiar Junction. The solar-powered unit
is part of a synchronised network of signals to be installed at
36 junctions to ensure smooth flow of traffic. The project is part
of the City Roads Improvement Project involving the development
of 42 km of roads and the construction of two flyovers and an underpass.
Thiruvananthapuram Road Development Company Limited, a special purpose
vehicle (SPV) was set up for the development of road network in
the Thiruvananthapuram Capital Region under the Thiruvananthapuram
City Roads Improvement Project.
The SPV was promoted by ITNL and Punj Lloyd Limited. The two hold
equal shares in Thiruvananthapuram Road Development Company Limited.
